Digital Postal Index Number
(The Future of Indian Digital Postal Addresses)
What is DIGIPIN?
DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) is an open-source, national-level addressing grid developed by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC). It acts as the foundational layer for India's digital address ecosystem, providing a simplified, precise location solution for both public and private services.
How the DIGIPIN Grid Works
DIGIPIN algorithmically divides the entire geographical territory of India—including its maritime Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for assets at sea—into uniform 4-meter by 4-meter units. Each specific square is assigned a unique, permanent 10-character alphanumeric code derived directly from its latitude and longitude coordinates.
- Offline & Independent: DIGIPIN is strictly a mathematical function of coordinates. It can act as a referencing system offline and does not require an internet connection to be decoded once the coordinates are known.
- Permanent Infrastructure: The code is immune to administrative changes. The arrival of a new building, or changes to the name of a road, locality, or state will never alter the underlying DIGIPIN of that 4x4 meter plot.
- Privacy Focused: DIGIPIN solely represents a physical location. It does not store or link to any personal information, names, or property ownership data.
- Directional Logic: The grid symbols are assigned in an outward spiraling fashion. This means the code has built-in directionality—cells labeled with consecutive symbols are actual geographical neighbors.
DIGIPIN vs. Traditional PIN Code
While the standard 6-digit PIN code is excellent for sorting mail at a macro level, DIGIPIN is engineered for precise last-mile logistics, emergency response, and GIS-based digital services.
| Feature | Traditional PIN Code | DIGIPIN |
|---|---|---|
| Format | 6 Digits number (e.g., 110001) |
10 Alphanumeric Characters (e.g., 39J 49L L8T4) |
| Coverage | Broad neighborhood or delivery area | Precise 4-meter by 4-meter square |
| Usage | Administrative and postal boundaries | Exact GPS coordinates (Latitude/Longitude) |
| Stability | Subject to postal redistricting | Permanent and unchanging |
